The Hunt

Classic English Countryside Hunting

The Chillesford Estate spans 3,000 acres of mixed arable and coastal marshland in Suffolk — classic English country with a long sporting heritage. Hunt by glassing field margins at first light, walking the woodland edges, and taking measured shots at close to medium range. The terrain holds healthy populations of both fallow and muntjac, and the variety of ground gives every outing a different character.

For trophy hunters, the peak of the fallow season is the early autumn — late September through October — when bucks are in hard horn and clean coat. The muntjac element runs year-round, so the trip works at any point across the open season.

Each hunting day, you'll drive an hour east from Gowthorpe Manor to the Chillesford ground. The drive across East Anglia, between hedgerows and arable fields, is part of the rhythm of the week. At the end of each day, you head back to the Manor for a drink in the drawing room and a three-course dinner.

The Lodge

Gowthorpe Manor — Our Family Seat

A Grade II listed Elizabethan manor house dating from the 1520s, set in the heart of our 1,000-acre family estate. Oak beams, period furniture, a drawing room with a fireplace, and the kind of character that only five centuries of history can produce. The hallways are lined with sporting prints and trophies.

Bedrooms are individually furnished with comfortable beds, and the manor has a freestanding roll-top bath for those who want to soak after a day in the field. Meals are taken in the dining room — a full English breakfast, a relaxed lunch, and a locally sourced three-course dinner each evening. House drinks included throughout.

Hunting with George

George Watkinson, founder of Griffin Sporting Club

Raised on the family farm in the south of England, George developed his fieldcraft early. After Durham University and six years as a management consultant in London, he moved to the Outer Hebrides to work as a professional deer hunter and fishing guide.

It was a handful of encouraging American clients who convinced him to start his own outfitter — and Griffin Sporting Club was born to deliver traditional, hosted British fieldsports to visiting hunters.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need to bring my own rifle?

No — rifle, ammunition and licensing are all included. We recommend using the estate rifle: a Sako S20 in .270 with a sound moderator, sighted in and used on this ground week-in week-out. You're welcome to bring your own, though — UK firearm permits are straightforward for visitors and we'll walk you through the paperwork well in advance.

How does trophy export work?

We hand-deliver to our export partner. Fallow and muntjac are non-CITES — trophies typically arrive at your door within 60 days.

When's the best time to come?

Late September through October for hard-horn fallow bucks in clean coat — the peak trophy window. August and early September are also strong. Muntjac runs year-round.

What's the fitness level needed?

Low. This is gentle countryside walking — flat terrain, short distances, considered stalks rather than big hill days.

Can my partner come?

Yes. Observers stay at the Manor for $1,000, or add sightseeing for $2,000 — Norfolk Broads, Norwich Cathedral, Aldeburgh and the Suffolk coast.
