The Hunt

Mountain Hunting at its Finest

Glassing the mountainside from height, reading the ibex's movement, judging the wind, and working out the approach. Then a careful, unhurried stalk that closes the distance to a clean, ethical shot.

You'll hunt across 3,000 acres of Sierra Nevada mountain terrain — sun-bleached rock faces, high alpine ground, and sweeping views across Andalucía. These are not easy days. They are deeply rewarding ones.

At the end of each day, you head back to the village to wash, change, and walk to a local restaurant for dinner.

Cherín — An Andalusian Mountain Village

A private guest house in the heart of Cherín — an ancient Andalusian village nestled within the Sierra Nevada National Park. Stone streets, whitewashed houses, and the sort of calm that makes the time away from the hill as enjoyable as the time on it.

Each evening, the group will go to local restaurants in the village and surrounding area to eat and drink well — simple local cooking, local wine, and the kind of unhurried dinner that only a Spanish mountain village can offer. Comfortable, characterful, well-suited to a small group.

Hunting with Enrique

Born and raised in southern Spain, Enrique grew up between two of the country's great hunting heartlands. His mother's family is from the region considered the capital of the Montería — Spain's traditional driven hunt. His father's family is rooted in the Alpujarra, the small-village country in the Sierra Nevada where Enrique now guides his ibex hunts.

Out of those two worlds he built his outfit, Sulayr Hunting. Sulayr is the old Arabic name for the Sierra Nevada — "Mountain of the Sun" — and a nod to Granada, the last city of the Nasrid kingdom. Enrique knows this country better than anyone we'd trust to take a client up the hill, and Griffin Sporting Club partners with Sulayr to host visiting American hunters end-to-end.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need to bring my own rifle?

No — rifle, ammunition and licensing are all included. We recommend using Enrique's rifle: a Bergara in .308, sighted in and used week-in week-out on this ground. Bringing your own rifle to Spain involves additional paperwork (firearms permit, ammunition declaration, customs at both ends), and most clients find the included rifle removes the hassle entirely.

How does trophy export work?

We hand-deliver to our export partner who manages USDA documentation. Ibex are non-CITES — trophies typically arrive at your door within 60 days.

How fit do I need to be?

More than for a Highland hunt. Sierra Nevada is real mountain country — expect long climbs at altitude (up to 3,000m). Train walking with a pack beforehand.

What's the success rate?

High. Ibex are abundant on the Cherín ground and your guide knows the terrain intimately.

Can my partner come?

Absolutely. Observers stay at the guest house for $1,000, or add a sightseeing programme for $2,500 — guided day trips around Granada and Andalucía.
