The Hunt

The British Slam — One Week

Begin at Gowthorpe Manor for the lowland species — roe, muntjac, fallow and Chinese water deer across 3,000 acres of Norfolk countryside. Each species requires a different approach. Hedgerows at first light, woodland edges, arable fields, and field margins.

Mid-week, fly by light aircraft from Norfolk to Sutherland — under two hours, no road slog. Touch down and transfer to Garvault House for the Highland leg. Two days on the open hill for red and sika stags. This is hunting at its finest — glassing from a ridge, reading the wind, earning every shot the hard way.

At the end of each day, you head back to the lodge for a whisky by the fire and dinner. A complete British deer slam in seven days.

Hunting with George

George Watkinson, founder of Griffin Sporting Club

Raised on the family farm in the south of England, George developed his fieldcraft early. After Durham University and six years as a management consultant in London, he moved to the Outer Hebrides to work as a professional deer hunter and fishing guide.

It was a handful of encouraging American clients who convinced him to start his own outfitter — and Griffin Sporting Club was born to deliver traditional, hosted British fieldsports to visiting hunters.

FAQ

Common Questions

What's the success rate on all six species?

High but not guaranteed — six species in five hunting days is genuinely ambitious. We honestly talk through expectations on a planning call.

Do I need to be very fit?

Moderate fitness — Norfolk is gentle, Sutherland involves rough hill walking. Comfortable on 6-10 miles a day on uneven terrain.

Why the light aircraft transfer?

It saves a day. Driving Norfolk to Sutherland is 8+ hours; flying is under 2. Means your fifth hunting day stays a hunting day, not a travel day.

Can a partner come?

Yes — observers stay at both lodges for $3,000, or add sightseeing for $5,000. The trip is limited to 2 hunters but observers welcome alongside.

How do I book?

50% deposit secures your dates. Balance due 3 months before arrival. Limited to one party per season window, so dates lock in quickly.
